Thursday July 9th: To kick off the celebrations and give our guests the chance to get to know one another before the big day, we will be hosting a welcome gathering the evening prior — featuring one of our favorite activities in Sweden: cruising by boat along the beautiful coast of Gothenburg! Time 18:30-22 (6:30pm-10pm): Please arrive early to the docking area, as the boat departs promptly at 19:00 / 7pm. Boarding starts at 18:30 (6:30pm). The cruise lasts from 19:00-22:00 (7–10pm). We are so excited to share a first update with you of hotel links and travel advice to make your trip to Gothenburg as easy as possible! More information of the day of will be updated at a later stage. The reason we are sharing this now is because Gothenburg is a relatively small city (US measured). Hotels/Air BnB's will soon become fully booked due to two global youth sporting events (No joke - see next section for more info and fun facts on this). Therefore we highly recommend booking your hotel as soon as possible. Please check out the Travel Advice section for more info regarding general travel and more. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to reach out. We are here to help! But keep in mind, more info regarding the big day will come at a later stage.

First Update

A few notes on Strawberry hotels...

Most Strawberry hotels are centrally located and good options, ranging from budget to more high-end. Public transportation is frequent and runs late at night to all hotels. The Strawberry Hotels on the "Main"/Downtown side of Gothenburg we recommend (in order) are: Clarion Hotel Draken: Newer, modern, awesome views, closer to the venue, walking distance to downtown or by a couple tram stops. Great option.Comfort Hotel: Budget friendly, waterfront, ferry stop right outside. Fun rooftop bar.Clarion Hotel Post: Iconic established hotel with many amenities.Comfort Hotel City: Budget friendly.Home Hotel Odin:&nbsp; Budget-friendly. Quality Hotel Waterfront: Closest hotel to the venue — about a 15-minute walk along the water. It’s beautifully situated by the water, though not within walking distance to the downtown core. It’s located in a more residential area but with nautical vibes, and a few restaurants, bars and cafes nearby. Access to downtown Gothenburg within 15-30 minutes with tram, or 10-15 minutes with Taxi/Uber. A few of the Strawberry Hotels are still central with city feel and great choices, but on the opposite side of the canal from downtown. These are highly recommended if you don't necessarily need walking distance to the downtown core of Gothenburg. All three have ferry or bus stops within a few minutes walk from the hotel.&nbsp; These are all lovely choices in vibrant yet calmer neighborhoods of the city with great views, restaurants, cafés, and a scenic waterfront walk. You won’t find much shopping or nightlife (apart from the rooftop and sky bars at the hotels, which are quite popular spots in summer), but it’s a charming area to relax and enjoy the views with a quick trip to downtown with public transportation or Taxi/Uber. In no recommended order, these hotels are: Quality Hotel 11: Located in “Eriksberg” (if you’ve ever seen Johanna and KJ post from Johanna’s dads place - this is where this hotel is). Eriksberg is an historic shipyard turned modern harbor-town vibes. Waterfront views, ferry stop right outside, and a bus stop within a few minutes walk - 20-30 minutes to Downtown and 10-15 minutes by Taxi/Uber. The two hotels below are near each other and about 15-25 minutes bus or ferry to downtown, and 10-15 minutes with Taxi/Uber. Clarion Hotel Karlatornet: Newer hotel. Tallest building in Scandinavia. Clarion Hotel The Pier: Modern. Waterfront. Below are a few hotels slightly farther from the downtown core and venue. If the hotels above become fully-booked these hotels below are still good options with tram/bus stops within a couple minutes walk from the hotel. They are still considered the city and within reach to downtown by public transport (15–30 minutes) or 10–15 minutes by Taxi/Uber, and about 20 minutes by Taxi/Uber to the venue. Recommended in order: Quality Hotel the WeaverHome Hotel MektagonenComfort Hotel PanoramaQuality Hotel Winn: The least central location.

Helpful Tips / When should I get to Gothenburg?

- Sweden is six hours ahead of US (East Coast)- There are no direct flights from the US to Gothenburg Landvetter airport, this means you'll have at least one connecting flight.&nbsp;- Typical connecting flights we do are London, Frankurt, Munich, or Amsterdam. Scandinavian airlines have started flying out of Boston with connection in Copenhagen, Denmark.- Most flights (from Boston) are overnight and with the time difference you’ll typically land in the morning local time the next day.&nbsp; If you’re good at sleeping on a plane - great! (Johanna is not, KJ is!)....Flying overnight can make you very tired when arriving in Sweden and the struggle to either stay awake another full day and go to bed early, or take a way too long nap when arriving can be tough. Keep in mind most hotels don’t allow check-in until afternoon.&nbsp; This brings us to our next point….when should you arrive in Gothenburg? Our goal is to have a “The night before get-together” on Thursday July 9th so our fellow Swedes and Americans can mingle and get to know each other before the big day.&nbsp; We recommend arriving in Gothenburg Wednesday July 8th at the latest - to soak in the atmosphere and especially if you are not spending prior days in Europe and being able to get rid of jet lag. Unless it's a must, we do not recommend your arrival date to be the 9th if you want to participate in the welcome gathering in case of flight delays or cancellations.

I am traveling somewhere before or after, how should I book/get to Gothenburg?

Since there are no direct flights from the US to Gothenburg there are other relatively close and amazing destinations with larger airports (if you find a better flight there and want to visit another destination): Stockholm, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark. From each of these destinations you can take a train to Gothenburg in a few hours.&nbsp; If you’re traveling elsewhere before or after the wedding, avoid booking one-way flights, especially between Europe and the US (your transatlantic flight) —you’ll pay taxes twice resulting in higher fares. Instead consider a multi-city trip. Most airline or travel websites have this option (you'll find it with the return trip or one-way options). Sometimes these can be more costly than a return trip to the same destination, but it typically cost less than buying multiple one-way tickets. With a multi-city ticket, you can fly into one European city and return from another on the same booking (e.g., fly into Gothenburg and home from Copenhagen). You can also add destinations—like flying into Spain and home from Gothenburg—within that multi-city booking you add your trip from Spain to Gothenburg - or that in between trip can be a one-way flight. Flights within Europe can sometimes be cheap. In short: If you are traveling elsewhere than Gothenburg avoid one-way transatlantic tickets, and explore multi-city booking.

How long should I stay in Gothenburg / Sweden?

If you’re wondering how long to stay in Gothenburg is 100% up to you! It is a vibrant city with shopping, nightlife, restaurants, spas, Scandinavia's largest amusement park, museums, golf - and close to nature like lakes, hiking trails, public bathing spots where you can sunbathe and plunge in the Northern Sea (if the weather allows) and experience our famous westcoast and archipelago made up of hundreds of islands right outside the city accessible by public transportation.&nbsp; We will post more detailed advice on this to do at a later stage as well but believe us, you can easily spend several days in Gothenburg without being bored, or do the city in 2-3 days. It is all up to you and what you are able to.&nbsp; Just between 1-2 hours north or south of Gothenburg you can also take a road trip for the day or stay over-night. These road trips are accessible by trains, buses or by renting a car. Driving in Sweden is considered easy and safe. The rules are relatively the same (except no turn on red, and lots of rotaries). Going north, 1-2 hours:- Bohuslän County: Gorgeous cliff coastal life. Towards Norway.- Towns/Islands to look up are Marstrand, Smögen, Grebbestad, Fjällbacka, and more…..- This scenery is my (Johanna's) favorite. Reach out for more advice or ask ChatGPT! Going South, 1-2 hours:- Halland County: Sandy beaches and cute surf towns. Towards Denmark.- Towns to look up are Varberg, Falkenberg, Halmstad.&nbsp; If you want more information on other destinations within Sweden let us know - or again, ask ChatGPT! There is so much more to see. It's a big country with diverse nature from south to north, ranging from meadows and beaches, to forests and cliffs.

Gothia and Partille Cup Fun Facts!

As mentioned in the previous page, Gothenburg is the host of two global youth sports tournaments every year. In 2026 Gothia Cup kicks-off July 13th - but due to the global size of this tournament families will start arriving as early as July 10th until July 12th, and hotels / air bnbs will get fully booked in the near future. Facts about Gothia Cup:- It's the worlds largest youth soccer tournament- Dates July 12 - July 18th- Around 1,700 teams participate- Ages 11-19- From about 80 nations- Over 4,500 matches are played- Across 110+ different soccer fields in or near Gothenburg.- Johanna has a gold and silver medal from Gothia cup! If you are interested in soccer or just to experience something iconic you should definitely stay for this! It's like a mini world cup with players and fans representing their nations all over the city. There are several soccer fields right in the heart of downtown Gothenburg, and it's free! The first day of matches and opening ceremony is on July 13th. The opening ceremony takes place at the big stadium "Ullevi" and resembles that of a World Cup ceremony with players walking in with their flags, native outfits, along with the referees, and a big music performance. Prior to the wedding weekend is Partille Cup. This should not affect hotel bookings as much as Gothia cup but can still effect pricing of Strawberry hotels.&nbsp; Facts about Partille Cup: - World’s largest youth handball tournament- Dates June 29th - July 4th- Around 1,400 teams participate- Ages 8-21- From about 50 nations- Over 5,000 matches are played- On 70+ pitches in the Gothenburg area

Growing up, these two sisters couldn’t have been more different—but after a few resilient teenage years, the bride finally convinced Jessica she was cool. Our Gen Z Baby! Growing up with three guys, she's the boss lady of the family - standing on businessss so to speak. Having one overprotective brother (KJ, that is), she’s also become a fierce protector of her friends and family—and has the biggest heart. As another fashion-forward sister of the bride she's not shy letting the millennial know when something just isn’t it.

Don’t let her grab the mic on the dance floor unless you’ve got earplugs.

You know that one person you meet as a teenager that you don’t have much in common with, but you’re like, “Hey, you’re cool—let’s be best friends forever?” And then the rest is history. Cissi is the bride’s hip-hop-dancing bestie since est. 2009 (or earlier—who knows). One sunny day, they were just besties.

Don't let her request a song, unless you want to cry. Do let her show you her happy feet dance skills.

Not many days growing up were these two separated—classmates from grades 1–9, soccer teammates, and three years at the same high school. She also holds an active travel punch card to the U.S. for visiting the bridal couple. It’s safe to say many incredible memories have been shared (and a few tears over beers). A true ride-or-die girl—not only to the bride, but to all her friends and family.

Don’t be scared if she showers you with love—that just means you’re approved.

The bride and Millie met their freshmen year playing soccer at NU. A fellow European, who now also reside in the US and married an American - it’s no wonder they clicked from day one! Living in Texas, the bride often visits and it's become a highlight week of the year as they drive around Houston binge-eating food. Best hosts ever!

Confusion is one word for what happened at AIC when two blonde Swedish girls with the same name ended up on the same team, played the same position, were roommates, and even shared the same major. As if that weren’t enough, the bride and Johanna were inseparable everywhere else—so much so that some people genuinely wondered if they were dating. Nicknames didn’t help, either; they became known as Jo Squared, or Jo #1 and Jo #2 (often leading to debates over who was #1).

Although the bride is Jo #1 for the wedding, Johanna (Nilsson) has always been Jo #1 and has been part of the bridal couple’s journey since the very beginning, back when they first met at AIC.

The younger brother of the groom Dr.McDreamy! Korey spreads joy all around the room, not only through his charm and warmth, but also with the guarantee that you have never heard a more infectious laughter. Growing up, just like the bride and her older sister, Korey and KJ could not have been more different. Now, their banter have turned into laughter and love instead of kicking in doors and chasing each other. Watch out for him as he takes the stage on the dancefloor, he knows how to shake it and won't hold back.

He’s an explorer, an adventurer, a cook, a reader, a poet, and a writer—what doesn’t this man do? Growing up in Florida and spending summers together, the groom and Cedric are more like brothers. And as the free-spirited solo adventurer he is, the strict rules at Victoria Lane during those summers are still something they laugh about to this day.

A man close to his heart, with a great sense of humor and a wonderful dad—not just to his children, but to the whole group. The Goonan house is the place to be, where you’re treated like VIP guests and always leave with bellies full of food and laughter. Our “man version” of Clara, he’ll remind you how much he loves you—especially after a couple drinks. Ask him, or better yet, ask the groom, about the story when he broke his leg during a football game (yes, the photo is of him in a wheelchair during that time). Fair warning: he might be tired of telling it, and sometimes the groom never will be.

The groom and Demetri can still talk and bicker about high school football stats to this day, though to some of us, it might as well be Greek. Ask KJ and Demetri separately who would win in a wrestling match, and you’ll get two very different answers. KJ’s never-ending delusion that anyone would believe him? Come onnn. And although KJ and Demetri sometimes act like a married couple, Demetri is always there for the bridal couple—especially to answer the groom’s never-ending FaceTime calls.

Also known as the bridal couple’s boyfriend—yes, to each of them. Nick and KJ go on more “dates” and spend more time on FaceTime with each other than the bridal couple does. How much can you talk about sports, you ask? Evidently, forever… but no complaints. Nick also takes Johanna out for food after golfing.

Maybe after a few drinks, he’ll share his singing voice with you—unless he’s still haunted by stage fright from his high school basketball days.

The cool, calm, and collected heart of the Minnechaug High School crew. A loyal man to the bone, who would take the shirt off his back for anyone. Cool as a cucumber—until he would step into the face-off circle in lacrosse. But don’t let his now-kind, calm presence fool you: after curfews until he was 23 years old, this beast is fully unleashed on the dance floor… and free to go home whenever he wants.

Let us introduce your Toastmadames for the evening! These girls never say no to a challenge, an adventure, or a party—and they’ll never leave a dance floor until they’re kicked out. 

The bride and her Toastmadames started as soccer rivals around age 12, became teammates on the Gothenburg District team as teenagers (while still battling each other in the regular league), and eventually ended up besties when they landed in the same high school class. Not without some initial intimidation on each other’s part, which they now frequently laugh about.

A top activity that we recommend is taking a day trip out to Gothenburg's famous archipelago. Departing from Stenpiren in central Gothenburg, or you can take a tram or taxi from central Gothenburg to Saltholmens ferry terminal. Or, Saltholmen is also your closest option from the city to enjoy a day on the cliffs of swimming and tanning. Among the many islands to visit, the larger ones are Styrsö, Donsö and Vrångö, where you can stroll around, go for a swim and grab some food. Vrångö is the southernmost inhabited island of the Gothenburg archipelago, where you’ll find a scenic 360 lookout tower, nature reserve and swim spots overlooking the vast ocean.

About an hour north of Gothenburg lies the island of Marstrand—a highly recommended trip if you have the time. The island is full of restaurants, bars, and shops, and is home to a historic 17th-century fortress with incredible views overlooking the coast. Marstrand offers a mix of idyllic Swedish coastal summer houses as well as grand historic buildings. Cobblestone streets and a car-free island atmosphere make it especially charming. An easy day trip or a lovely place to stay overnight. Accessible by bus from Gothenburg, or by rental car. Cars are parked on the mainland side, and a short 24/7 ferry ride takes you across to the island.

Marstrand Island

Feskekörka (translated as "fish church") is a famous building and attraction, and a must visit while in Gothenburg. It was an historic fish market, that was renovated and reopened in 2024–2025, now featuring modern fish counters, restaurants, and an oyster bar while preserving its heritage. If you love seafood, this is the spot to go to! Along the same street you'll find fun bars such as Zahmenhof (arcade and bar), Boulebar (literally a bar where you play boule), and the restaurant Barabicu.

Translated as "The Second Long Street" - This is the dive bar street of Gothenburg. Full of quirky and eccentric bars. Go for a pregame, or after party? With bars closing around midnight-1am on weekdays, and 2-3am on weekends. Among a vast selection, Le Pub is a favorite one.

Andra Långgatan

Cut a corner from "The Second Long Street" and you'll find a pretty different vibe of more trendy restaurants and bars on "The Third Long Street", such as Tacos &amp; Tequila, Averna Taverna, and Made in China. A favorite bar here is Kafé Magasinet for cheaper beers.

"Haga" is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Gothenburg. Take a stroll on the main street and grab a Swedish "Fika" at one of the many cute cafés and check out some unique shops. If you like seafood, grab a lunch or dinner at Sjöbaren.

Take the bus or ferry across the canal and stroll along Eriksberg’s boardwalk, soaking in the nautical vibes and beautiful views of Gothenburg from the waterfront. You can find cute cafés, hotel rooftop bars, restaurants and a replica of the famous ship Götheborg. Walk a little further or get off at Lindholmen Science Park for more bars, restaurants and trendy hotel rooftops.

Slottskogen is the main park of Gothenburg city. Get off at Linnéplatsen and just start walking towards the trees. There are animals, minigolf, and cafés spread out across park. Definitely take the slightly uphill walk and treat yourself at the top with the best soft serve ice cream and waffles in Gothenburg at Café Bräket, while enjoying views of the reindeer! This is where Johanna used to work during summers in college.

It’s hard to miss “The Avenue”, Gothenburg city's main boulevard (full street name Kunsgportsavenyen). Avenyn is lined with shops, rooftop bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. Walk along the street to the top where the iconic statue of Poseidon stands, along with the Gothenburg Museum of Art, The Gothenburg Concert Hall, and the Gothenburg City Theatre.

"The large food hall". You can't miss it, located in the heart of downtown Gothenburg you'll find this food market with a lot of different delicacies. Definitely worth a lunch visit, or just stroll through.

Stora Saluhallen

Liseberg is the largest amusement park in the Nordic countries and is highly recommended. It's a very cute and cool Swedish themed park. Go on rides, play games or just stroll around and get some drinks, food or snacks. Prices in the summer is around $15-$20 for entrance and $40-$60 for unlimited rides.

Next to Liseberg is Gothia Towers, a hotel and convention center. But, at the top is the restaurant Heaven 23, long known for their classic Swedish shrimp sandwhich (king size). There is also a spa called Upper House Spa where you don't have to be a guest, and can pay for a few hours to relax after your shrimp sandwich.

Also located next to Liseberg is Universeum, the largest science center/museum in the Nordic countries. It's not your classic museum, it's more interactive with multiple floors of science experiments to try, as well as an aquarium, and a rainforest, and more. Bring out your inner child on a rainy day if you're curious!

Gothenburg is rich in history. If you’re in the mood for a bit of culture, there are plenty of museums and guided tours to help you discover more about the city. The classic Paddan boat tour takes you under low bridges through Gothenburg’s canals and is one of the most popular ways to see the city.

Fine Dining Seafood - There's lots of great restaurants all over the city varying from street food to fine dining. One rather famous fine dining seafood spot located about 10-15 minutes from downtown Gothenburg is Sjömagasinet. A rustic Swedish vibe by the water.

Gothenburg’s version of Miami meets Vegas. Jacy’z is a relatively new—and one of the tallest—hotels in the city, offering high-energy luxury with indoor and outdoor pool clubs, spas, entertainment, bars, and restaurants. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the mood for a vibey atmosphere.

In the (sadly) high chance of rain—and if you're in the mood to relax—Gothenburg, and Sweden in general, offers plenty of spas where you can book access for a few hours without being a hotel guest. Arken Spa is one of the larger spas in Gothenburg located by the water, with two floors of pools, saunas, and relaxation areas. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the city center and is also accessible by bus.

Payments in Sweden Gothenburg and Sweden in general is pretty much cashless. But, it's always good to bring some cash in local currency. If you haven't travel abroad before, paying with a regular debit card might add international transaction fees. If you have a credit card, check if it has 0% international transaction fees. Another option is Revolut, an app that lets you load a prepaid debit card with local currency. Using Your Phone in Sweden Everyone travels differently, but we find it helpful having internet connection while in Sweden for things such as public transportation, ride shares, payments, etc. Sweden is not as wi-fi generous as the US... Calling or texting without data can get expensive. Check your phone plan, many offer international data packages but these can also get expensive if you need it daily. This would be the easiest way though. Another option is travel e-sim cards... I (Johanna), use Airalo or Holafly while in Sweden or other countries. This only works if your phone has an e-sim card/digital sim-card. It's very easy to set up and works great. Make sure to turn off your US data plan e-sim temporarily, or at least data roaming on the US plan e-sim to avoid high data charges.
